Some bodywork folks have been wondering about this Gyrotonic thing I'm involved with. I have the great pleasure of working at a movement studio that specializes in the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis systems. The studio is Chicago Northshore Kinetics and the team is a dream. I should say that what follows are purely my opinions and has emerged from my personal understanding of the systems. In the near future, we'll get some interviews and footage of experts up here.
In brief, the perspective of the Gyrotonic/Kinesis systems focuses on gentle articulations of the spine in coordination with additional full body choreography in multiple planes. The fundamentals can be applied with or without equipment. The Gyrotonic system (with equipment) is accessible enough to be used by movement novices or for rehabilitation yet can be ramped up and refined to challenge even professional movers.

By combining stretching, active muscle loading, spiraling, spinal undulations and breathwork - Gyrotonic, my opinion, is the perfect connective tissue training tool. Components of the fascial systems have been shown to respond quite differently depending on the type of movements and the individual understanding of internal organization of movement. In my opinion, Gyro - as either system can be referred to in short - dovetails perfectly with the rebalancing, alignment and body image completion goals of connective tissue therapies because the fundamentals of the system are based in whole body coordination originating from the gravity center. Gyro leads participants to understanding a sort of effortlessness in moving rather than being stuck in muscularly segmented holding patterns. The result is a "lightness" or "fluidity" that is noticeably different than classic workout training methods.
In addition to offering bodywork alongside movement programs, at CNS Kinetics we're playing with directly connecting manual fascial therapies with Gyro. We're offering what we call "Co-sessions" where I work alongside a movement facilitator during your workout offering adjustments, releases and analysis.
Bodywork - even Structural Integration - and other more active modalities is a largely passive process for many clients. Sure, practitioners might utilize isolated movement during a release or technique but it's pretty rare to have the opportunity to apply techniques during full body movements without interruption. However, doing so can facilitate major awareness changes and inspire new outlooks on movement patterns almost immediately.
Check out the CNS website for more info or Google around to see more videos of Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis.
The results are pretty cool. For now, this is something we're offering to individuals with a certain amount of experience in the system, however, there is much more to come.
We're also working on co-session with versatile and fabulous Pilates styles.
